Teaching Forever or The One & Done

A few years ago I had a wonderful teaching gig. It actually paid decent money. That is if you have enough students. That is if they don't cancel on you or take a million vacations, or just don't show up, or give you any number of other "west coast" excuses not to be there. Do you know how much the median income is here in Seattle? Guess what? It's $70,000. Ha! I have never made half of that in one year. This is an expensive place to live. Whatever right? So years ago I started thinking OMG I am going to have to teach private lessons for my whole life just to make enough loot to live. I call these lessons "one and done." You teach. You get paid for your time. The end. Of course one on one private lessons are VERY important, but what if I shared every lesson that I ever taught over the last twenty years with anyone who wanted to learn saxphone? That's a ton of lessons! That is one of the reasons for starting our YouTube channel. I have the opportunity to share the same lesson over and over. It may not be as hip as a one on one private lesson, but teaching forever is super cool. More of it! BAM!

YouTube or Website?

Should we expand our YouTube channel or work toward building a website? We have been discussing this recently after an incredible effort to build a website using Wordpress. I have learned a lot. Building a fully functional video library database is hard work and is incredibly expensive. There are only a few examples that I can find on the internet who have beautiful websites where you can find content very easily. One of them is Khan Academy. Sal Khan is one of the inspirations for Music Education For All. Now he's on TV during the Superbowl. Touchdown for math and science!

If you shift people from your YouTube channel to your own website are you potentially losing views, subscribers, or revenue? Is creating a more functional YouTube channel a better idea than building an expensive website? Is going after brand deals a better idea than building a website? Is hiring someone to pursue brand deals a better idea than spending money on a website? These are just a few questions that we have been thinking about lately. Truth is we don't have any money to build a fancy schmancy website, but we have also considered another crowd funding campaign using Indiegogo. Then again perhaps we should just focus on teaching music lessons. Free music lessons to free your mind! I welcome your thoughts...

Saxophone Lesson Library

That is exactly what we have over here at Music Education For All. In fact I think we have the most comprehensive library of saxophone lessons on the internet! All for free. Why? I believe that education should be available to anyone, not just those that can afford it. I was fortunate enough to have some wonderful instructors over the years. Now it is time to give back, or as the long distance hikers call it: pay forward. Thanks for checking Music Education For All. Lots more good stuff to come!
